Acne- not just a teenage problem

Many people assume that acne affects only teenagers. In reality, many people continue to suffer from acne problems even into the late 20s and 30s… Acne can be a frustrating condition to deal with. Many acne sufferers struggle with their skin problem, and experience low self esteem and even depression.

So what causes acne? Acne develops as a result of a combination of 3 key factors: 1) sebum over-production, 2) obstruction of pores by dead skin cells 3) bacterial overgrowth. Hence, the key to successful acne treatment lies in targeting these factors. The good news is that there is currently very effective medical treatments available for acne. Mild acne can be treated with a combination of good topical antimicrobial preparations, as well as a topical retinoid. Topical retinoids are very important in the treatment of acne and long term maintenance of acne-free skin. They are derived from Vitamin A and work mainly by speeding up the turnover of the skin cells, allowing the skin cells to be shed off, hence preventing clogging of the pores.

For more severe acne, oral medications are added and can be very effective. Oral medications such as certain oral antibiotics, oral vitamin A, certain oral contraceptive pills are useful in treating acne.

It is important to know that treatment for acne usually takes at least 6-8 weeks for the effect to be visible, so do be patient. For people who are looking for a faster improvement, chemical peels can be added to help speed up the reduction of acne and lightening of the scars.

I also find that additional Intense Pulsed light treatment( IPL) and Hydrafacial treatment helps with clearing up the skin. IPL has been around for many years and is useful for skin rejuvenation. It can help to reduce pore size, reduce the amount of acne-causing bacteria on the skin, and lghten the brown acne scars. The Hydrafacial treatment, on the other hand, helps to thoroughly clean out the pores…

In conclusion, with the current armourmentarium of treatments available for acne, acne sufferers no longer have to struggle with bad skin!
